Roy Thomas, the esteemed former editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics and a prolific writer of Tarzan narratives for both Marvel and Dark Horse Comics, is set to grace ERBCon 2026 as featured speaker and will be honored with the Golden Lion Award in recognition of his significant contributions to the lore and fandom surrounding Edgar Rice Burroughs. Throughout his illustrious career, which spans Marvel, DC, and various other publishing houses, Thomas has crafted iconic titles such as X-Men, The Avengers, Wonder Woman, and Justice Society of America. He is also credited with co-creating a host of beloved characters, including Wolverine, Ghost Rider, Vision, Luke Cage, Ultron, Morbius, Red Guardian, and Valkyrie. In addition to his work on superheroes, Thomas played a pivotal role in bringing classic pulp characters like Tarzan, Doc Savage, and Conan the Barbarian into the realm of comics and graphic novels. His talents extend to screenwriting as well, with notable credits that include The New Fantastic Four, Thundarr the Barbarian, Conan the Destroyer, G.I. Prove it! At ERBCon 2026 — to be held June 25-28 in Raleigh, North Carolina — you will have the chance to prove your level of ERB knowledge by competing in the first-ever Burroughs Bowl.

This quiz-bowl event will feature teams of up to four contestants competing against other teams in preliminary rounds, head-to-head, for the chance to play in the finals — where the winning team shall be crowned the 2026 Warlords of Wisdom!

Questions will touch on all aspects of Burroughs lore, both within the ERB Universe and from the Real World (whatever that is), and will feature toss-ups open to all players and then bonus questions for the team of the player who wins the toss-up.
